A rather wet & wild start to 2024

A rather wet & wild welcome to 2024!

While the rain continues to fall (2023 saw a whopping 1107.5mm!), there's plenty of good news and exciting developments happening at Lewes Golf Club.

Lewes Golf Club Celebrates James's Level 2 Apprenticeship in Sportsturf!

Lewes Golf Club is thrilled to announce that our dedicated Greenkeeper, James, has successfully passed his Level 2 Apprenticeship in Sportsturf! This is a remarkable achievement, and we couldn't be prouder of his hard work and dedication.

James has been a valuable member of the Lewes Golf Club team ever since joining us at LGC. he has consistently demonstrated his passion for greenkeeping and commitment to maintaining our course in pristine condition. His meticulous attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and members alike.

James's successful completion of his apprenticeship marks a significant milestone in his career. The Level 2 qualification recognizes his in-depth knowledge and practical skills in all aspects of sports turf management, including:

  • Soil science and plant health

  • Turfgrass selection and cultivation

  • Drainage and irrigation systems

  • Pest and disease control

  • Machinery and equipment operation

  • Sustainable greenkeeping practices

James's newfound knowledge and expertise will be invaluable to Lewes Golf Club as we continue to strive for excellence in course maintenance. We have no doubt that he will continue to make a significant contribution to the club's success in the years to come.

Once again, congratulations to James on this fantastic achievement! We are all incredibly proud of you, and we look forward to seeing you continue to excel in your chosen field.

Lewes Golf Club Course Updates - Clearing the clutter

You'll be happy to see the recent scrub clearing work down the right-hand side of the 16th fairway. Not only does it look much better, but it should also help you find your ball more easily and speed up play. This section, along with the cleared area on the 15th, will now be treated similarly to the long grass, mowed and collected annually to encourage finer grasses and wildflowers.

A visible difference to the scene behind the 16th green now at Lewes Golf Club since the dense scrub has now been removed

Bunker blitz

Course updates continue at Lewes Golf Club, get ready for some stunning new bunkers (just like the recently refurbished 'Captains Bunker' below). We're prioritizing the work on the 4th, 15th, 5th, 6th, and 3rd holes. While the order might change depending on the weather, please be patient and avoid these areas while we're working. Remember, a little cooperation goes a long way!

Respect the greens

We've noticed an increase in divots on the greens lately. With more green fees than ever, it's a friendly reminder to all golfers to be mindful of repairing your divots and reminding others to do the same. Let's work together to keep our greens in top condition.

Pitch perfect

Speaking of course etiquette, please remember to repair pitch marks and follow the white lines. The better we all care for the course in the winter, the better it will be for everyone come spring.

A sign asking golfers to follow the white lines around the course at Lewes during the wet weather as we have our 'winter buggy route in effect.
Follow the white lines....Please!

And Finally

Here's to a fantastic 2024 season! We look forward to seeing you all out on the course soon.
